Good morning, it's finally the weekend, and we've got quite a day ahead of us. With some strong to severe storms possible later today and a taste of summer heat arriving by the end of next week, there's plenty to talk about.
This morning, temperatures are in the low to mid 70s as some parts of our region experience showers that are quickly weakening. Today, the Storm Prediction Center has our region under a Slight Risk for strong to severe storms. The main hazards include damaging wind gusts of 50-60 mph, hail, and a low tornado risk.
While we may see some showers and storms across the area this morning, these storms are not expected to become severe. The primary severe weather window looks to be between 2 PM and 10 PM tonight.
Today's severe weather potential will depend on how quickly the morning showers and cloud cover move out, allowing for daytime heating and increased instability. If we can get enough sunshine, conditions will become more favorable for stronger storms. Winds aloft appear quite favorable for storm organization, which is why damaging wind gusts remain our primary concern.
Storms will clear out tonight and set us up for a day of mostly sunny skies and drier weather on Sunday. Temperatures tomorrow will reach the upper 70s to near 80 degrees, but dewpoints will remain in the 50s, making for a much more comfortable day.
Looking ahead, a much warmer pattern takes hold next week. Temperatures will climb into the mid-80s by Monday, with periodic chances for showers and storms through the middle of the week. By late week, highs may push into the upper 80s, with heat index values reaching the 90s in some locations.
Stay weather aware this afternoon and evening, and be prepared to receive warnings if storms become severe.
